AVIS COURT HOUSE FIRE

By Treasurer Clay Myers
March 23, 2013

Gamber & Community Fire Co. and neighboring units were alerted for a house fire just about midnight (11:53 pm) on Friday, March 22, 2013. The fire was located on Avis Ct. off of Wilda Dr. in Westminster.

Gamber Fire Chief, Charlie Green, arrived first on the scene and reported a working fire with heavy fire showing.

A rapid intervention dispatch was alerted. This brought additional apparatus and personnel as well as Howard County's Air Unit. Early in the incident, the roof started to collapse so all firefighting was done from the exterior.

Since there are no fire hydrants in the community, approximately 30,000 gallons of water were used in total from engines, tankers, and from the underground storage tanks located at the Gamber Fire Co. station. A tanker shuttle was established to provide water during the incident. An engine from Sykesville established the water source at Gamber.

Two residents were home at the time and they were able to escape the fire. A neighbor provided shelter and assistance. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide additional assistance to the family. BGE responded and turned off the power to the residence.

Gamber was assisted by Reese, Westminster, Sykesville, and Winfield. An engine from Reisterstown filled in at the Gamber station and ran a medical assist call at 2:36 am.

A deputy from the Office of the State Fire Marshal was on the scene investigating. There was no determination of the cause or the amount of loss.
