WATERSHED WOODS FIRE

By Treasurer Clay Myers
May 10, 2015

Gamber & Community Fire Co. units were alerted for a brush and woods fire at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday, May 10. Units were directed to the area of Deer Park Road in the reservoir watershed not far from the bridge.

Engine 56 from Baltimore County's Franklin Station had already been dispatched to the area for a reported woods fire. The original call had the fire located somewhere on Baltimore County's side of the reservoir. Once it was determined to be on the Carroll County side of the water, Gamber was alerted.

Units on the scene upgraded the response and asked for additional brush trucks, engines, and tankers. The ATV from Sykesville was also requested as was a bulldozer from the state. A Baltimore County Police helicopter surveyed the scene from the air and reported that the fire was burning almost two acres of woods near the water's edge and far from the road.

Firefighters had to drag hose through the woods in order to fight the flames. Reisterstown's engine provided foam to help with fighting the fire and Sykesville's ATV used a portable pump to draft water from the reservoir. A folding tank operation was established on Deer Park Rd. and tankers ran a shuttle for water to the Franklin Station's hydrant and to Louisville Rd. where Howard County Water Supply 3 was set up to draft water from a stream.

The fire was declared out at approximately 7:00 pm and units returned to service after that. Deer Park Road remained closed during the incident. An engine from Winfield and an ambulance from Westminster filled in at the Gamber station.
