EARLY MORNING WORKING HOUSE FIRE

By Treasurer Clay Myers
May 11, 2015

Carroll County fire companies were alerted for a house fire on Sykesville Road (Rt. 32) just north of Nottingham Rd. in Westminster at 4:10 am. on Monday, May 11.

Engine 134 from Gamber arrived on the scene and reported a working fire with flames coming from the entire first floor. The structure was a two-story frame farm house with a full metal roof and a porch on the front and side of the house.

Chief 13-1, Charlie Green, established command and requested a tanker task force and the State Fire Marshal. Shortly after more units arrived, firefighters were withdrawn from the house and a defensive attack was established. The porch collapsed shortly after that. One resident was home at the time of the fire and was able to escape without injury.

The bulk of the fire was controlled by 4:42 am and units continued work on extinguishing the remaining fire and numerous hot spots. The metal roof presented challenges and allowed smoke and heat to buildup underneath until it was cut and removed.

Engine, truck, and rescue companies from Reese, Sykesville, Westminster, Winfield, New Windsor, Pleasant Valley, and Hampstead from Carroll County assisted. Paramedic 99 from Reese was available at the fire ground. Engines from Reisterstown, Glyndon, and Arcadia from Baltimore County were also on the scene. Later in the incident, companies from Taneytown and Alpha Fire Co. (#20) from Littlestown, PA who were filling in Carroll County stations, responded to the scene to assist in overhaul.

Water supply was set up at the Buc's Club pond on Bird View Road. The Carroll County building inspector, American Red Cross, and BGE were all notified. Maryland State Police and State Highways also assisted.

The fire was declared out and command was terminated at 8:10 am. Deputies from the Office of the State Fire Marshal are conducting an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.

Remaining crews returned to the Gamber station for breakfast prepared by the Gamber Auxiliary.
