Water Rescue at Liberty Reservoir

By Public Information Officer Bruce Bouch
May 21, 2018

At 6:15 p.m. crews from Gamber were alerted for a report of three victims in the water after their boat capsized in Liberty Reservoir.

The Dive and Swiftwater Rescue Team responded with Dive Unit 13, Utility 13, Boat 13 and Boat 13-1. Fishermen on another boat located the victims in the water, but were not able to safely bring them aboard their vessel. They contacted the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center, whom then alerted both Gamber and Sykesville Fire Departments of the need for their assistance. Both boats were placed in the water and actively effected the rescue of the victims. It should be noted the three fishermen were wearing their life safety vests, averting a more tragic outcome as result. Team members were also able to retrieve the canoe and personal belongings and all were brought back to the shore safely. All three victims refused medical services available at the scene from Sykesville Freedom Fire Department.

Department of Natural Resources and Baltimore City Watershed Police were notified and responded to the scene.

The Gamber & Community Fire Company reminds anyone choosing to boat on open waters, to wear their personal floatation devices. You should always take necessary steps to prepare for an unexpected emergency.
