The Oscar Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program

Members of the Gamber & Community Fire Co. and the Oscar Brothers Family celebrated the first four successful years of the Oscar Brothers Scholarship Program on Sunday, January 15.

Many members of the Brothers family and friends attended to participate in the unveiling of a bronze bust of Oscar Brothers. Included were Oscar's widow, Virginia, and their four sons, Harold, Gary, Billy, and Terry. The family members now live scattered all along the east coast but all made the trip back to Gamber for the dedication.

Oscar was a Charter Member of the fire company and the company's first president. He was president during two other terms. He passed away in 1981. The scholarship named in his memory is offered each year jointly by the fire company and the Brothers Family. Financial need, academics, and community service are all weighed in the application process. Applicants must also reside in Gamber's fire district.

Five scholarship winners from the first four years of the program attended along with their families. They are: Angel Nicholson, 2008-09, Rebecca Hancock, 2009-10, Sarah Hancock and Tyler Joyave, 2010-11, and Ashley Franklin, 2011-12.

After the ceremony, friends, family members, and Gamber members enjoyed a meal in the social hall.

The fifth year of the scholarship program will be starting soon.
