Gamber & Community Fire Co. and neighboring fire departments were alerted for a house fire at approximately 10:10 pm on Thursday, February 7 in the 100 block of Henry Avenue in the vicinity of Bartholow Road in Sykesville. First arriving units reported a working house fire with smoke and flames showing from the rear of the structure. A rapid Intervention dispatch was activated for additional resources.

The fire was located inside a two-story wood frame residence at the rear of the house. Some fire extended into the roof of the structure around the chimney/flue pipe before firefighters were able to control the flames and start extinguishment. Crews from Gamber, Sykesville, Winfield, Westminster, Reese, and Howard County Station 3 worked to extinguish the flames and checked to see that fire did not extend further into the house.

Three residents were able to safely evacuate the structure on their own before firefighters arrived.

One firefighter was injured during firefighting operation with a cut to the face from flying debris. He was treated on the scene by Gamber’s ambulance crew. Crews completed clean-up and started returning to service after midnight.

An engine from Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company filled in at the Gamber station.

Deputy state fire marshals from the Office of the State Fire Marshal are investigating the incident.
