A serious crash occurred on Rt. 97, New Washington Road, and Nicodemus Road on Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:47 pm. Units were alerted for a working rescue at that location.

Apparatus and crews from Gamber & Community Fire Co. and Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Co. responded on the initial call. Engine 134, Medic 139, both from Gamber, and Rescue Squad 9 from Reese were the first to arrive on location.

Crews discovered a crash between an SUV and a pickup truck. The pickup was on its side up against the guardrail with two trapped inside. Crews stabilized the truck and successfully removed the first patient within seven minutes. Firefighters had to remove the roof of the pickup truck to gain access to the second person. This patient was removed after 25 minutes. The truck being so close to the guard rail made the rescue more complicated.

Two Maryland State Police helicopters were called to transport two patients to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. One additional victim was transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Maryland State Police and Carroll County Sheriffs are investigating.
