Calvin W. Brothers, of Finksburg, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, after an extended illness. He was born on February 2, 1932.

He was a life member of the Gamber and Community Fire Company, where he had been extremely active over 46 years (1965 – 2011) of membership in the company.

He was Fire Chief in 1973, 1974, and 1976. He was President a total of 11 years in 5 different decades – 1969, 1970, 1979, 1980, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003 through 2006. He also served as 1st Vice President for 4 years, 2nd Vice President for 3 years and as a member of the Board of Directors for 4 years. Additionally, Calvin served on many different fire company committees both as chairman and as a member. He served many years with the county volunteer fireman's association (CCVESA) in numerous capacities, including President, and he was elected to the Carroll County Volunteer Fireman's Hall of Fame.

Calvin also was active in the Carroll County 4-H and the FFA. He served on the Board of the 4-H and FFA Fair. He was also a member of the Westminster VFW, the Westminster Moose, and the Westminster American Legion.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea. He had been Chief Building Inspector for Carroll County for many years and had also worked many years for Luther L. Brothers Builders.

Calvin was the husband of Carol Ann Brothers who died in 2010. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Jen and Chad Dean of Odenton, sons and daughter-in-law Rick Bartels of Glen Burnie, and John and Alisha Bartels of Gamber, brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Brothers of Gamber, Luther L. and Eva M. Brothers of Gamber, and Carl Melvin and Bonnie Brothers of Traverse City, MI, sister Joan Gist of Gamber, and grandchildren Kera Jefcoat, Kaitlyn Crabtree, Tyler Bartels and Olivia Hope Bartels, and great grandson Layton Jefcoat. He was predeceased by his sisters Grace Shipley, Jeanette Robertson, Marietta Clark, and Amelia Sue Green, his brother-in-law Richard Gist, and his grandson John Eric Bartels.

Friends may call at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville, on Sunday, January 1, 2012, from 2-5pm and 6-8pm. The Gamber and Community Fire Co. will hold a memorial service at 7:45pm on Sunday. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012, at 10:00 am at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel with Deacon Charles Barnhart officiating. Interment will be in Providence Cemetery, Gamber.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gamber and Community Fire Co., 3838 Niner Rd., Finksburg, MD 21048.
