Hughes Road House Fire Presents Challenges to Firefighters
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Public Information Officer Clay Myers
March 21, 2019

Crews from Gamber and neighboring fire companies fought a challenging fire in a two story unoccupied dwelling on Hughes Road off of Route 91 in Finksburg early Wednesday afternoon.

The call was dispatched at 12:58 pm and first units arrived at 1:06 p.m. A working fire dispatch was declared which brought additional firefighters and apparatus including tankers. An interior attack was started but officers issued an evacuation order at 1:30 p.m. The fire was brought under control shortly after that.

The house is located across the Beaver Run stream so fire equipment could not cross over to gain close access. They had to drag hose lines across the stream and up to the house. Brush 95, Reese's brush truck, pumped water from the stream to Gamber's Engine 134 which then supplied the supply line hoses to the fire. The driveway to the property actually fords the stream so engines could not cross over. The "ford" can be seen in the two photos of the Brush unit where it is drafting water from the Beaver Run.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
