NOTE: This was the original description of the scholarship when it was first introduced in 2012.
The Oscar Brothers Memorial Scholarship
provided by the Oscar Brothers Family
and
Gamber & Community Fire Company
Gamber and Community Fire Company, in cooperation with the Oscar Brothers family, will be offering a four (4) year scholarship annually, up to $12,500, to a student who resides within the primary area serviced by the Gamber & Community Fire Company. This scholarship will be officially known as the Oscar Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program.
The Brothers family has resided in the Gamber community for over 200 years. Oscar’s family has resided on Sykesville Rd. near the firehouse since 1944, and his widow Virginia still lives there and still logs many volunteer hours in the community every year. Oscar (1916-1981) was always active in community affairs and was one of the driving forces in getting the Fire Company established in the early 1960’s and served as its 1st President. Oscar and Virginia were fortunate to have had 4 sons. Though they are all grown adults living up and down the east coast, the fabric of small-town America remains tightly woven in their values and personalities. We all consider having grown up in Gamber one of the most important blessings of our lives.
As is the case with most communities, the day will come when the Brother’s family name will disappear from the Gamber community. This scholarship is our way of giving back to the community that will forever be part of who we are and what we achieved. By providing a college education opportunity for students in our community, then maybe someday they will have the opportunity to give back to the community
The scholarship we have established is financially generous and it is our hope that through proper funding the Oscar Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program will live in perpetuity and overtime can benefit the community in additional ways. Good luck to all applicants.
