Units from the Gamber & Community Fire Company were alerted to assist the Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Company on Thursday morning, November 30, 2006, at approximately 10:10 am. The call was for a vehicle collision with rescue on Route 140 just north of Route 91 in the 9-6 Box Area. Gamber responded with Paramedic 139 and Engine 131.
The collision involved two cars in the westbound lane, but both cars were very far apart and had a significant amount of damage. Crews from Reese's Rescue 9 worked on the car that was furthest west, on the shoulder, and Engine 131 worked on the second vehicle in the slow lane of the highway. Each car had one trapped victim and additional victims already out of the cars. Crews from Engine 131 pulled a hose line and used their rescue tools to remove the driver's door, cut the roof posts, and push back the dashboard. Sykesville Freedom District Fire Company's Rescue Squad 12 arrived and assisted with the removal of the roof and the final extrication of the victim.
After the patient extrication was complete, Engine 131 was sent up the road to the Gerstell Academy to provide a landing site for Maryland State Police helicopter, Trooper 3. Gamber's ambulance transported their victim to the landing site for transport by the Trooper to University of Maryland Shock Trauma. Units returned to service just after 11:00 am.
