| Firefighters battled a one alarm house fire that sent two people to the hospital Friday evening.
The blaze at 1003 Johnsville Road was reported around 5:40 pm. Arriving crews found the split-level, single family home heavily involved in fire on the top floor, with fire burning through the roof.
Crews from Engine 123 stretched a hose line to the rear of the house and made entry off of the deck. Other crews forced entry through the front door and stretched a second hose line. Inside, crews were met with intense heat and heavy fire conditions in a rear bedroom.
With assistance from Gamber and Winfield firefighters, Sykesville crews were able to pull down ceilings and walls, exposing fire in the attic space. The fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes, with control declared about 15 minutes later.
A woman and her toddler son were inside the home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape safely. The woman was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore by the Maryland State Police for treatment of unspecified injuries. Her son was taken to Carroll Hospital Center by ambulance. The names and conditions of the patients are not being released, due to privacy concerns.
The fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office, with assistance by the Maryland State Police. A cause has not been released as of this time.
