By Public Information Officer Clay Myers
July 28, 2022

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Gamber & Community Fire Co. announces the passing of Life Member Mike Sullivan.

William Michael “Mike” Sullivan, 60, of Sykesville passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore from injuries sustained in an accident.

Born February 10, 1962, in Baltimore, he was the son of William Sullivan of Sykesville and the late Dolores H. (Hess) Sullivan. He was the loving husband of Susan M. Sullivan and had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in May.

Mike was a graduate of Westminster High School, with the class of 1980. At a young age, he started working for his father’s home improvement business. When his father retired, Mike started his own company, Sullivan Home Improvements, which he did until his own retirement.

Mike was currently employed at McDaniel College, in the Grounds Maintenance Department, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.

He was a Life Active Member of the Gamber & Community Fire Company, where he served as Bingo Chairman and cooked fried chicken at all the fire company’s events. Mike was just recognized with his 40-year membership pin at this year’s awards ceremony in March 2022, having joined the company in 1981. Earlier in his volunteer career at Gamber, Mike was a firefighter and apparatus driver. He continued his work at the fire station even though he stopped responding on emergency calls. Mike served on the Board of Directors as an at-large member in 2020.

The fire company plays an important role in the Sullivan family. His wife Susan is the fire company’s treasurer, and his father, William R. Sullivan, is also a life active member and past president of the fire company. His daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Patrick, and his son Bill are also members. Patrick is a Fire Lieutenant.

Mike was active with many fire company activities, but especially the bingo committee. He served as chairman for many years and led it to be the most successful fund raiser for the fire company. Gamber’s bingo won first place for 2021 as the Best Place to Play Bingo in Carroll County. In years prior, it always finished in either first or second place in the Carroll County Times’ “Carroll’s Best” contest. Mike also ran bingo at the carnival for years in the bingo tent, and later assisted every year with one of the many games and wheels in the fire department’s carnival building.

He enjoyed baseball and softball and was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. He was a former coach, umpire, and board member for the Westminster Jaycees Girls Softball League. He was currently coaching his granddaughter’s softball team for Freedom Optimist Softball.

Mike liked listening, and often sang along (loudly), to old country music while on his back porch at home. He loved his family and adored his grandchildren, especially the time he spent dancing, singing, and playing with them.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are children and spouses Cynthia and Darren Martin of Hanover, PA, Stephanie and Patrick Livesay of Sykesville, and William “Bill” and Amanda Sullivan of Westminster; siblings and spouses Brenda and Scott Humphreys of Westminster, Patricia and James Freeze of Westminster, Gary and Sandy Sullivan of Reisterstown, and Karen Costello of Luray, Virginia; grandchildren Charlotte, Sara, Savannah, Caroline, Zachary; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will welcome friends on Sunday, July 31, 2022, from 1 to 4 pm and 6 to 9 pm with a Fire Department Memorial Service at 8 pm at the Gamber & Community Fire Company, 3838 Niner Road, Finksburg MD 21048.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 1, 2022, at 11 am at the fire department with a visitation one hour prior to the start of services, officiated by Pastor Rev. Melissa Helfer. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Deer Park.

Services and arrangements provided by Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Gamber and Community Fire Company in lieu of flowers.

Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.prittsfuneralhome.com
