Second House Fire in 12 Hours

By Public Information Officer Clay Myers
November 15, 2023

A second house fire within 12 hours challenged firefighters from Gamber and neighboring fire companies on Wednesday, November 15. This call was dispatched at approximately 5:08 pm for a house fire in the 4300 block of Poole Rd. in Gamber. Poole Rd. runs off of Sykesville Rd., Rt. 32.

Firefighters arrived with smoke and fire showing and requested a working fire dispatch which includes staffing for a rapid intervention team.

Gamber Chief 13, Chad Hastings, took command and firefighters entered the dwelling with hose lines from the front door. The fire was quickly contained and eventually declared under control. The house presented challenges due to belongings in the house and more than 20 cats, one dog, and several birds. The dog was rescued and many cats either were brought out by firefighters or ran out on their own. It could not be determined if any pets perished in the fire.

The dwelling's property was at the end of Poole Road after it narrowed to one lane followed by a long driveway. A water tanker shuttle was established due to the difficulty of getting water to the scene. More than 1000 feet of supply line was laid along the driveway.

Fire Marshals from the Office of the State Fire Marshal were dispatched to conduct an investigation. There were no injuries to the residents or fire personnel. The Carroll County building inspector was also notified.

Also during the day, Gamber's medic unit responded to four medical emergencies: trouble breathing at 9:27 am; injured person at 12:14 pm; chest pains at 4:52 pm; and decreased level of consciousness at 6:36 pm in Sykesville.
